To understand the high prevalence rates among prisoners, we must look at environmental, familial, and individual factors that would in part explain why someone is more likely to commit crimes. The evidence shows that too often inmates’ living environments before prison tend to be characterized by certain conditions that would make illness and disease more susceptible. These environments tend to have a higher prevalence of pollution in the air as well as in the water, as well as including the higher presence of mosquitoes that carry disease that tend to find home where there are conditions of trash and standing water. Other characteristics of the environments inmates tend to come from include a higher exposure rate to crime and drug violence, disturbing family patterns such as domestic violence, and others. This in turn increases the activation of the fight or flight system leading to the onset of poor health and certain stress-related disease, such as heart disease. Whatever the causal effects are, inmates do tend to have higher rates of physicaland mental health conditions, which is where are group topic comes into play- medical companies within prisons are able to prey on these populations’ needs for medical services and inturn take advantage of them to boost their own incentive- profit. Key words: profit, medical companies, take advantage, ecology, illness

ECOLOGY OF PRISON ILLNESS3The Business of Illness- From an Ecological ViewpointHealth in America is no longer a problem you can ignore. It is affecting almost everyone and if not you, I am sure you can say you know someone who is suffering from some sort of illness. The statistics are staggering. One in three Americans have arthritis and state they suffer from chronic pain, 1 in 5 suffer from mental illness, a new case of Alzheimer’s disease is documented about every 68 seconds, which is expected to rise to one in every 33 seconds by 2050, 9.3% of Americans live with diabetes, 1 in 68 children live with Autism Spectrum Disorder, 1 in 2 American people will die of cancer, and lastly, approximately 50% of the world’speople by 2030 will be obese (Dahl, 2013). To understand why illness and debilitating diseases are affecting a vast majority of our population, we will diagnosis the causes of health issues froman ecological standpoint, which will be defined at looking at how the relationships between humans, modernization, the environment, and how animals have interacted over the generations to result in increased illness and lowered health. We will then look at how the increase of illness has been directly related to the benefit of pharm
